Rice and CELF Partner to Train Future Environmental Justice Leaders

At an event on April 25, Carrie Masiello, director of the Rice Sustainability Institute announced a partnership between Rice University’s Office of STEM Engagement (R-STEM) and the Children’s Environmental Literacy Foundation (CELF), supported by a $425,616 EPA grant. The three-year project will engage Title I middle and high school students from economically disadvantaged communities in Houston to conduct research on local environmental justice issues and propose climate resilience strategies.

The initiative includes collaborations with the Galveston Bay Foundation and school districts such as Channelview ISD, Aldine ISD, Houston ISD, and Pasadena ISD. Students will work with Rice faculty for data collection and analysis, aiming to become future environmental justice advocates.
