Hiring Intern | Dive into Environmental Storytelling with EcoStudio’s Gulf Streams Podcast

Rice’s Center for Environmental Studies and the Rice Sustainability Institute's EcoStudio produce a weekly hour-long radio program, Gulf Streams, which airs on KPFT Houston. The program (Mondays at noon, and available on Apple Podcasts, PodBean, and Spotify) focuses on a wide range of environmental issues, especially around Houston, Texas, and the Gulf Coast (with some focus on national and international stories).

We are hiring an intern for the 2024 fall semester with an optional possibility of renewal to work on the show during the 2025 spring term. Interns will do some combination of the following:

• Research weekly feature stories with the host/producer
• Research and develop smaller (5-15m) stories highlighting topics they are interested in pursuing
• Host or co-host episodes
• Develop useful connections with Rice faculty and external partners
• Learn basic audio editing skills (no previous experience necessary)
• Develop knowledge of a range of environmental issues and solutions
• Social media communication

Beyond this, there may be opportunities for developing content for other outlets (NPR, etc.). Interns are not required to have audio or journalism backgrounds and may come from any discipline — mentorship is key to the program and the expectation is that interns will learn new skills as they work on the program.

Internships are paid ($15 an hour, expected time commitment of around 10 hours a week). Interns may be graduate or undergraduate students from any discipline as long as they have an interest in environmental research/communications.

Questions should be directed to Dr. Weston Twardowski (westont@rice.edu). To apply, please email Dr. Twardowskii a 1-page cover letter expressing interest in the program and a resume or CV by 11:59PM on Friday, August 23rd. Job duties will begin in late August or early September.
